How much is lipo depends first on how many areas you are buying, which is the thing no national average measures

Almost every practice in the United States prices liposuction by area or by group of areas, and almost every published national figure ignores that entirely. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons average cost of liposuction, $4,711, is a single average surgeon fee across every liposuction case in the country, from one small area under local anesthetic to a circumferential case under general. Reconciling those two facts is the whole job when pricing this operation.

How area pricing actually works

The first area carries the fixed costs: the anesthetist arriving, the theatre being opened, the preparation and the recovery. Additional areas add surgical time and very little else, which is why a second area is routinely charged at less than the first and why practices publish area bundles. It also means that the per-area price a patient quotes back from somebody else's quote is meaningless unless the number of areas matches.

Where the national average fits

It fits as a check on the surgeon's own charge, and nowhere else. ASPS says the fee it averages does not include anesthesia, operating room facilities or other related expenses, and names medical tests, post-surgery garments and prescriptions as further costs. Five of the six lines on the bill are outside the average, and on a multi-area case under general anesthetic they are not the small half.

The questions that produce a comparable number

Which areas, how many, under what anesthesia, in which theatre, and what the garment and follow-up schedule costs. Two practices answering those five questions can be compared. Two practices quoting a headline each cannot. ASPS also notes that most health insurance plans do not cover liposuction or its complications and that many surgeons offer financing, so the whole figure is the patient's to fund one way or another.

Other questions people ask

How much is lipo per area?

No national per-area figure is published. The ASPS average of $4,711 is a surgeon fee across all liposuction cases, and practices set their own area and bundle pricing.

Is the second area cheaper than the first?

Usually, because the first area carries the fixed costs of opening a theatre and an anesthetist attending, and additional areas add mostly surgical time.

What is not in the published average?

Anesthesia, hospital or surgical facility costs, medical tests and x-rays, post-surgery garments and prescriptions for medication, all named by ASPS.

Does insurance cover any of it?

ASPS states that most health insurance plans do not cover liposuction or its complications.
