Rhinoplasty cost, and what every other cosmetic operation is quoted at in the US, read off published fees rather than off a consultation

A cosmetic operation is the purest self-pay purchase in American medicine. No plan pays for it, so the only number a patient has before the consultation is whatever somebody has published, and the published numbers come in two incompatible shapes. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports an average surgeon fee per procedure, and a practice quotes a price for the whole operation. Rhinoplasty is the clearest case: the ASPS average cost of rhinoplasty is $7,637, and the same page says that figure does not include anesthesia, operating room facilities or other related expenses. This section holds both shapes apart on every page, because the gap between them is where a budget goes wrong.

How to read a cosmetic surgery price before you sit down with anyone

  1. Find out whether the figure is a surgeon fee or a package. The ASPS averages are surgeon fees only. A practice quoting a single number is usually quoting surgeon, anesthesia and facility together. Comparing one against the other is the most common budgeting mistake in this trade.
  2. Ask what the facility and the anesthetist cost separately. These are the two lines that turn a surgeon fee into a bill, they are billed by different entities, and they are almost never inside a headline figure.
  3. Ask what a revision would be charged at. Revision policy is a price term, not a courtesy. Some practices carry a stated revision fee and some charge the operation again; the difference is thousands of dollars and it is decided before you book, not after.
  4. Ask which of the quoted procedures are being combined. Combined operations share one anesthetic and one facility booking, so two procedures together almost never cost the two headline prices added up. Ask for the combined quote in writing.

What the national averages actually are

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes an average surgeon fee for each cosmetic operation and repeats the same caveat on every one of those pages: the figure does not include anesthesia, operating room facilities or other related expenses. Read as what they are, they are the most useful free numbers in this market, because they are national, they are consistent between procedures, and they are not a sales page.

The averages we quote through this section were read on 11 September 2026 and are the ASPS figures for rhinoplasty at $7,637, liposuction at $4,711, a tummy tuck at $8,174, a facelift at $11,395 and a neck lift at $7,885. Each page in this section names its own source and its own date rather than pointing at a table, because a figure that has traveled away from its source is no longer evidence of anything.

Why a practice quote is larger, and by roughly how much

A surgeon fee is one of three or four bills. The anesthetist bills separately, the surgical facility bills separately, and garments, medical tests and prescriptions sit outside both. On the procedures where this hub already holds a practice quote beside the ASPS average, the practice number has run several thousand dollars above the average, and the gap is almost exactly the theatre and the anesthetist.

That is why this section never converts an average into a quote. What it does instead is state the average, state what the average excludes in the source's own words, and list the lines a patient has to ask about separately before the number in their head can be trusted.

What this section does not publish

No page here ranks surgeons. This product publishes a price record, and no-pay-to-rank-presented-as-merit is an obligation of the compliance position it operates under, so a best surgeon list is out of scope however heavily it is searched.

No page here gives clinical content either. Whether you are a candidate, what the recovery is like, what the risks are and what a result will look like are all questions for the surgeon who examines you. This section states what things cost and where that figure was published. It does not tell anybody what to do.

Questions patients ask before they book

What is the average cost of rhinoplasty in the US?
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons puts the average cost of rhinoplasty at $7,637. The same page states that this is a surgeon fee and does not include anesthesia, operating room facilities or other related expenses.
Why does a surgeon quote me more than the national average?
Because the national average is a surgeon fee alone. A practice quoting one number for the whole operation is including the anesthetist and the facility, and those two are most of the difference.
Does insurance pay for any of this?
Almost never for a cosmetic operation. Two exceptions appear repeatedly in the published sources: upper eyelid surgery where redundant skin covers the lashes, and breast reduction, which ASPS says is often covered subject to approval. We publish what the sources say and give no insurance advice.
Are the figures on these pages quotes?
No. Every figure is quoted from a page somebody else published, with the date we read it. A price you can rely on comes from a provider who has examined you and put it in writing.
