What a tooth implant costs when the practice publishes a price, and what the figure has to cover to be a tooth

A tooth implant is the one dental price where the number and the thing being sold come apart most easily. The post that goes into the jaw, the abutment that connects to it and the crown you can see are three separate items, and a figure that covers one of them is not the price of a tooth. The Dental Express in San Diego publishes a single tooth implant at $3,000 to $6,000 and says explicitly that the figure covers all three. That is the shape of a complete fee, and it is the shape to compare anything else against.

How to get an implant price you can actually compare

  1. Ask which of the three components the figure covers. Post, abutment and crown are separately priced items in most practices. A quote that covers the post alone will look like a bargain and will not give you a tooth you can chew with.
  2. Ask what happens if you need a bone graft or a sinus lift. These are the two additions that most often change an implant bill, they are decided from a scan rather than from a conversation, and they are almost never in a published headline figure.
  3. Ask what the crown is made of and who makes it. Porcelain, zirconia and composite crowns are priced differently and last differently. A published range usually spans several materials and the opening figure is the cheapest one in it.
  4. Ask whether the consultation and the 3D scan are charged and credited. Imaging is the line most often missing from a published fee page, and knowing whether it is credited against treatment is worth more than a small difference in the headline.

What a practice that publishes a figure actually publishes

The Dental Express, a San Diego practice, publishes a single tooth implant at $3,000 to $6,000 and breaks the fee into the implant post, the abutment and the crown. Publishing the breakdown is rarer than publishing the total, and it is the more useful half, because it is the breakdown that lets you tell whether somebody else's cheaper number is the same product.

That range is wide for a single tooth, and the width is real rather than evasive. Two patients replacing one molar can differ by the state of the bone underneath it, by whether a tooth has to come out first, and by what the crown is made of. A practice that publishes one flat figure for every case is either simplifying or excluding, and it is worth finding out which.

Why the cheap advertised implant is usually not a tooth

The lowest advertised implant prices in this trade are almost always the surgical placement of the post on its own. It is a real price for a real thing, and it is not a replacement tooth: without an abutment and a crown there is nothing to bite with. When a headline figure is less than half the published range above, the first question is not whether the practice is good, it is which of the three components you are being quoted for.

The second question is what happens next. An implant placed and then restored somewhere else means two practices, two fees and two people who each think the other owns the outcome. Ask whether the figure is for the whole course of treatment through to a finished tooth, and ask who is responsible if the crown fails.

What is not in any published figure

Extraction of the tooth being replaced, bone grafting, a sinus lift and any temporary tooth you wear while the implant integrates are the four items that most often appear on the final bill and not on the published page. None of them is a hidden fee in the dishonest sense. They are decided from a scan of your jaw, which is why they cannot be printed in advance, and it is why a written price after imaging is a different document from a figure on a website.

Timing is the other omission. An implant is usually months of treatment rather than an appointment, and practices differ on how much is due when. A practice that will put the schedule of payments in writing beside the total is telling you something useful about how it runs.

Questions patients ask before they book

How much does a tooth implant cost in the US?
The Dental Express in San Diego publishes a single tooth implant at $3,000 to $6,000, covering the implant post, the abutment and the crown. That is the only complete single-tooth fee published by a practice in this record, and it is the figure to compare others against.
Why do some practices advertise an implant for far less?
Because a much lower figure is usually the surgical placement of the titanium post alone, without the abutment or the crown. It is a real price for part of the work, not for a finished tooth.
Is a bone graft included in a published implant price?
Almost never. Whether you need one is decided from a 3D scan of your jaw, so it cannot honestly be printed in advance. Ask for it to be priced separately in your written quote.
Should I ask for a good-faith estimate?
Yes. Nothing on this site is one. A good-faith estimate is a written duty your provider owes you under the No Surprises Act, and it is the document to ask for once a plan exists.
