A mini tummy tuck is a smaller operation than the one the national average is drawn from, and it is quoted accordingly

A mini tummy tuck works below the navel. It removes a limited amount of skin through a shorter incision, it usually leaves the navel where it is, and in many cases it does not tighten the muscle wall above it. That makes it a genuinely smaller operation than the one the national average measures: the American Society of Plastic Surgeons average cost of a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is $8,174, a surgeon fee excluding anesthesia, operating room facilities and other related expenses, and it is drawn from full abdominoplasty as the standard case.

What separates it from a full abdominoplasty

Three things: the length of the incision, whether the navel is repositioned, and whether the muscle wall is repaired above the navel as well as below. Each of those adds theatre time, and theatre time is what the anesthesia and facility lines are billed against. A practice quoting a mini should be able to say which of the three it is not doing, and what the full version would be quoted at, so that the saving is visible rather than implied.

Why a cheaper operation can still be the wrong one

The limit of a mini tummy tuck is anatomical rather than financial. If the skin excess sits above the navel, or if the muscle separation runs the length of the abdomen, a short-incision operation cannot reach it, and the result will be a smaller version of what the patient wanted at a price that was never the point. The examination decides this. This record prices the operations; it does not tell anybody which one they need.

The lines that do not shrink with the operation

ASPS names anesthesia fees, hospital or surgical facility costs, medical tests, post-surgery garments and prescriptions as the costs beside the surgeon fee. Of those, tests, garments and prescriptions barely move between a mini and a full operation, and the facility only moves with theatre time. So a mini is not proportionally cheaper across the whole bill, and a quote that treats it as half price on every line is worth questioning.

Questions people ask about mini tummy tuck

How much does a mini tummy tuck cost?

No separate national average is published for the mini version. The ASPS average for a tummy tuck is $8,174 as a surgeon fee excluding anesthesia and facility, drawn from the full operation, and practices generally quote a mini below it.

Does a mini tummy tuck include muscle repair?

Often not above the navel, and sometimes not at all. It is the first thing to establish about a quoted figure, because it is the element that most changes the operation.

Why is my surgeon recommending the full operation?

Usually because the skin excess or the muscle separation extends above the navel, which a short incision cannot reach. That is a clinical judgement made on examination.

Is any of it covered by insurance?

ASPS states that most health insurance plans do not cover tummy tuck surgery or its complications.
