A beard transplant is priced by graft, and the graft count is the only number that makes two quotes comparable

A beard transplant moves hair follicles from the back of the scalp into the face, filling gaps along the jaw, the cheeks, the moustache or a patchy chin. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons publishes national average costs for its surgical procedures but publishes none for hair transplantation, so there is no published US figure to hold a quote against. What there is instead is a unit: practices price by the graft, and a full beard takes many more grafts than a patch.

Why the graft count is the whole quote

Filling a scar or a small gap may take a few hundred grafts. Building a full beard on a face with very little native growth runs into the thousands. Because the price is per graft, the difference between those two jobs is severalfold, and a clinic advertising a headline price is almost always quoting the smaller one. Ask for the estimated graft count in writing alongside the per-graft rate, and compare those two numbers rather than the advertised total.

The donor site is a finite budget

Grafts taken for the face are taken from the scalp, usually the back and sides, and they do not grow back where they came from. A patient who may later want scalp work is spending from the same account. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that the donor hairs are removed either by cutting a strip of hair-bearing skin or by removing individual follicles, which takes longer but avoids a long narrow scar. Which method a clinic uses affects both the price and the scar you are left with.

What a transplanted beard behaves like

Scalp hair moved to the face keeps scalp characteristics: it usually needs trimming more often than native beard hair and its texture can differ. Transplanted hairs also shed in the weeks after surgery before regrowing, so the result is not visible for months. AAD describes the operation itself as lasting roughly four to eight hours. A clinic that promises a finished beard at six weeks is describing shedding, not growth.

Questions people ask about beard transplant

How much does a beard transplant cost in the US?

There is no published national average. ASPS publishes no cost figure for hair transplantation, and practices price by the graft.

How many grafts will I need?

A few hundred for a gap or a scar, and into the thousands for a full beard. Get the estimated count in writing before comparing prices.

Where does the hair come from?

The back and sides of the scalp, either as a strip of hair-bearing skin or as individually removed follicles.

When will it look finished?

Months, not weeks. Transplanted hairs shed before they regrow, so early appearance says nothing about the final result.
