MRI scan brain cost against a joint or a spine, on published US lists

An MRI is not one price because it is not one exam. On the lists that price region by region, a lower extremity joint is published at $596.48 to $880, a lumbar spine at $940 to $1,036.20 and a brain with and without contrast at $1,428.90. The head costs most on every list that separates them, and the reason is contrast and the number of sequences rather than the anatomy being harder to photograph.

The lists that price region by region

Radiology Consultants of Iowa publishes an MRI of the head with and without contrast at $1,560, a lower extremity joint without contrast at $880 and a lumbar spine without contrast at $940, and states that all of its fees include both the exam and the radiologist's reading fee. Diagnostic Imaging Centers prices by CPT code with reading and technical fees included: a lower extremity joint without contrast, CPT 73721, at $596.48; a lumbar spine without contrast, CPT 72148, at $1,036.20; a brain without and with contrast, CPT 70553, at $1,428.90. Advantage Diagnostics publishes a general MRI at $400 and brain studies with orbits, IAC, MRA or pituitary at $800.

Two lists that refuse to price by region at all

San Diego Imaging publishes an MRI or MRA without contrast at $480 and without and with contrast at $560, whatever is being scanned, and adds $240 for each additional MRI or MRA in the same visit. That is a policy rather than an oversight, and it inverts the comparison: a brain study with contrast is $560 there against $1,428.90 at a center that prices the brain specifically. Anyone pricing a head MRI should read both kinds of list, because the flat-rate centers are frequently cheaper for exactly the exams that itemised lists mark up.

What the region changes, and what MRI with contrast cost adds

Two separable things. Contrast: the brain studies quoted above are with and without contrast while the joints and spines are without, and Advantage Diagnostics puts a number on the difference by adding a flat $100 to any study ordered with contrast. Sequence count and time: a brain protocol with orbits or internal auditory canals is a longer appointment than a knee. Between them they account for most of the gap between $596.48 for a joint and $1,428.90 for a brain at the same center, on the same scanner, read by the same radiologist.

Cost of prostate MRI without insurance: when nobody publishes your exam

A prostate MRI is typically a multiparametric study with contrast, and none of the lists read for this record names it. That is recorded here rather than estimated around: a number nobody published is not a price. Where a center does not name your region, the tier above general is usually where it lands, which Advantage Diagnostics expresses as $800 for a named brain protocol against $400 for a general MRI. The practical move is to ask the center for the price of the specific protocol your referral names, and to ask whether contrast is inside it.

Ask for the exam, not for the modality

The single most useful habit when pricing an MRI by body part is to quote the exam back to the center in its own words, ideally with the CPT code from the referral. Diagnostic Imaging Centers publishes its whole list against codes for that reason. It removes the ambiguity that makes published ranges look wider than they are: $596.48 and $1,428.90 are not a disagreement about the price of an MRI, they are two different exams that share a word.

What this page is not

A price record, not a clinical one. Which region should be scanned, whether contrast is warranted and what any image shows are questions for the clinician who ordered the study; this site states no clinical claim on any page. Every figure is quoted from the center's own published list, read on 10 September 2026.

Questions people ask about mri scan brain cost

Why is a brain MRI more expensive than a knee MRI?

On the lists that price both, the brain study is quoted with and without contrast and the joint without: $596.48 against $1,428.90 at Diagnostic Imaging Centers, $880 against $1,560 at Radiology Consultants of Iowa. At San Diego Imaging, which charges one band for any MRI, they cost the same.

Is brain scan cost the same thing as brain MRI cost?

Not necessarily: a brain scan may be an MRI or a CT, and they are priced very differently. Diagnostic Imaging Centers publishes a CT of the head without contrast, CPT 70450, at $647.63 and an MRI of the brain without and with contrast, CPT 70553, at $1,428.90. Check which your referral names.

What does a shoulder MRI cost?

It is an upper extremity joint on an itemised list. Diagnostic Imaging Centers publishes an upper extremity joint without contrast at $596.48 and with contrast at $716.10, reading included. At a flat-rate center it is whatever any single MRI costs there.

What is the MRI scan for knee cost on these lists?

A knee is a lower extremity joint on an itemised list: $596.48 without contrast at Diagnostic Imaging Centers and $880 at Radiology Consultants of Iowa. A flat-rate list charges the same as for any other region.

What is brain MRI cost without insurance at the dearest list here?

$1,560 at Radiology Consultants of Iowa for an MRI of the head with and without contrast, against $1,428.90 at Diagnostic Imaging Centers.
