Self pay MRI prices in the US, read off four published lists

Self pay, cash pay and out of pocket name one transaction: you pay the center directly and no insurer is involved. Four US centers publish what that costs and the answer here runs from $299 to $800. The cheap end is real but conditional, and the expensive end is not a markup, it is a brain study with contrast at a center that puts the radiologist's fee inside the number.

What an MRI cash price buys at these four

Excel Medical Imaging publishes $299 for a general MRI without contrast as a promotional self-pay price, $349 normally, $379 with contrast only, $399 with and without, and $549 for a specialty MRI. Advantage Diagnostics publishes an MRI at $400 with professional interpretation included, an MRA of the brain or neck at $400, and brain studies with orbits, IAC, MRA or pituitary at $800, adding $100 to any study ordered with contrast. Independent Physicians Medical Center publishes $450 without contrast and $550 with and without. MH Imaging publishes $650 to $725 for any single MRI regardless of contrast, radiologist's reading included.

Cheap MRI without insurance is a promotional tier, and the list says so

The lowest MRI figure in this record, $299 at Excel Medical Imaging, is published as a promotion against a normal price of $349. The $50 gap matters less than the fact that the center names which is which. A cheap MRI in the United States means an independent outpatient center with a published list rather than a discount negotiated at a counter, and the floor of that market sits near $300 for a general scan without contrast. Below that, ask what is being sold: a scan price with no radiologist's read attached is not a finished product, and the read has to be bought from somebody.

MRI out of pocket cost is the same number under another name

Out of pocket usually means what you pay after an insurer has taken its part. A self-paying patient has no such part, so out of pocket and cash price are the same figure, and that is why these lists answer the question directly. What no published list can tell you is what an insured patient pays after a deductible and coinsurance, because that is a function of the plan rather than of the price. This record prices the transaction where no plan is involved, which is the one where a published number is the whole answer.

The contrast surcharge is the clearest term on any of these lists

Advantage Diagnostics states it plainly: $100 added to all studies ordered with contrast, on top of a $400 MRI. Excel Medical Imaging expresses the same thing as separate list rows, $299 without and $399 with and without. Independent Physicians Medical Center goes $450 to $550. MH Imaging charges nothing extra at all and prices any single MRI in one band. Three different pricing philosophies, all published, and the practical consequence is that the cheapest center for a plain scan is not necessarily the cheapest for yours.

Terms that come attached to a cash MRI price

A cash rate is usually conditional on paying in full at the time of service, and some centers say so explicitly. Advantage Diagnostics states that pricing is valid only on the day of service and that payment is due at the time of service. That is normal and it is not a catch, but it does mean a cash price is not a credit arrangement: the discount exists because the center is not billing anyone or waiting to be paid. If you cannot pay on the day, ask what the price becomes, because it will not be the published one.

What this page is not

A price record. It makes no clinical claim, recommends no center and assesses nobody. Whether you need an MRI, and which protocol, belongs to the clinician who ordered it. Every figure here is quoted from the center's own published list, read on 10 September 2026.

Questions people ask about self pay mri

Is a cash pay MRI price negotiable?

The published ones here are lists rather than opening offers. What is worth asking anywhere is whether the figure includes the radiologist's reading and whether contrast is extra, because those two answers change the total more than a discount usually would.

What does MRI self pay actually mean?

That you pay the center directly and no insurer is billed. Advantage Diagnostics attaches the usual conditions: the price is valid on the day of service and payment is due then. It is the same transaction that cash pay and out of pocket describe.

Why is a brain MRI $800 when a general MRI is $400 at the same place?

Because it is a different study. Advantage Diagnostics publishes an MRI at $400 and brain studies with orbits, IAC, MRA or pituitary at $800, and adds $100 to anything with contrast. More sequences, more time, more money.

How much is an MRI out of pocket at these centres?

$299 to $800 on the four lists here: from Excel Medical Imaging's promotional $299 for a general MRI without contrast to $800 for brain studies at Advantage Diagnostics.
