The cremation itself is identical. What differs is everything the funeral home does around it, and because the Funeral Rule obliges every US provider to itemise those things on one list, the difference can be read as a number rather than described. On Hodapp Funeral Homes' published list the plainest direct cremation is $2,300 and a visitation and funeral service with cremation to follow is $4,995 before the casket, so the gap between the two answers to the same question is $2,695 of staff, room and hours.
One is a disposition, the other is a package
Cremation, on a general price list, appears as a line called the cremation fee: at Hodapp it is $475.00, and it is the crematory's work and nothing else. Direct cremation is a package built around that fee, quoted at $2,150.00 at the same provider where the purchaser supplies the container. The difference between $475 and $2,150 is not the burning. It is the removal from the place of death, the transport to the crematory, the authorisations and the filing, the sheltering of the body in between, and the provider's non-declinable basic services fee, which at Hodapp is $1,795.00.
What you are actually choosing between
A family choosing cremation rather than direct cremation is usually choosing to have a service with the body present first. Hodapp prices that path as a visitation and funeral service with cremation to follow at $4,495 to $4,995, and its own note says the figure excludes the casket at $950, the cremation fee at $475, the register book package at $200, the clergy honorarium at $200 and the casket flower spray at $250. Add those and the same cremation costs about $7,000 rather than $2,300. Nothing about the cremation changed.
The middle option nobody asks for by name
There is a third shape on these lists and it is the one most families end up wanting: the cremation happens first, and the memorial happens afterwards with the ashes present rather than the body. Hodapp prices it at $3,550 during normal business hours, $3,800 on a weekday evening, $4,050 on a Saturday and $4,300 on a Sunday, each including two hours. It buys the room and the staff without buying the casket, the embalming or the hearse, which is why it lands between the other two.
Why the day of the week is in the price
Because what you are buying in the gap between cremation and direct cremation is staff time and a building, both of which cost more outside working hours. Hodapp's memorial service line moves $750 between a weekday morning and a Sunday, and its evening or weekend visitation is $1,030 against $530 for a daytime one. Sanders, which prices its use of facilities Monday to Friday only, lists visitation at $350 and a funeral ceremony at $450. On both lists the timing of the service is a real and separable cost, and it is one of the few a family can move without giving anything up.
Questions people ask about what is the difference between cremation and direct cremation
Is the cremation itself done differently?
No. The crematory does the same thing either way, and on Hodapp's list it is one line at $475.00 regardless of what surrounds it. The words direct cremation describe what the funeral home does and does not do around that line.
Can I see the body before a direct cremation?
Not as part of the package. A viewing means the use of facilities and staff, and usually embalming, both of which are priced separately: at Hodapp a daytime visitation is $530.00 and embalming $800.00. Once those are added the arrangement is no longer a direct cremation.
Which is cheaper, direct cremation or immediate burial?
On the lists read here they are close. Hodapp publishes both at $2,150.00 where the purchaser provides the container or casket. Boulger publishes direct cremation at $1,345.00 and immediate burial at $2,895.00 plus the vault and casket, and the cemetery's own charges fall on the burial and not the cremation.
Does a direct cremation stop us having a funeral?
No. It separates the two. The cremation happens on its own timetable and the gathering happens on yours, with the ashes present, which is what the memorial packages on these lists are priced for.
